Title: Why your next computer should be a Mac

I often have people say to me, "Tony, I just got a new computer. What do I do with it?"

I first ask if it is a Mac or a Windows computer. If it is a Windows computer, I tell them to disconnect any power source from the computer, then remove any battery it may have. Once this is done, fill your bath tub up about half way up, and hold your computer firmly under the water until your are sure it is dead. Then, go buy a Mac.

I love my Macs, all of them. I have many. This is common among Mac users, because they just seem to live forever. Yes, of course, they can break down, crash, die and anything else that can happen to a piece of electronics, but Macs seem to be more durable among the computer crowd. The problem is they often outlive their usefulness and their owners can't bare to part with them.

Ultimately, the Mac user needs to upgrade, or more often, feels the need to upgrade. Then, the stalwart workhorse is relegated to standing majestically in the corner waiting to be pressed into service once more. Meanwhile, the Mac user is falling in love with a new faster, prettier Mac. Oh, the shame of it all!

The experience of owning a Mac, falling in love with the platform and becoming a screaming Mac evangelist starts well before you even touch it. If you've ever bought a Mac, new from Apple, I don't need to tell you how exquisite the packaging is. Unwrapping your new Mac is a sensual experience in the true and pure sense. Everything feels right. Everything is beautiful, even the packaging which will be discarded and never again see the light of day. Apple has left out no detail. In truth, this experience is one we have not had since the Art Deco period.

Modern engineers have calculated everything down to the penny to make more profits for the company, but this comes at the cost of aesthetics, beauty and often, value. Apple products are more expensive up front, true, but the minute you take hold of it, you know it is worth more. Is it worth as much as you paid for it? You may even yet be skeptical.

When will you realize that your Mac is worth every penny? This usually happens the first time you hear about a virus going around in email and while you hear of friends and co-workers who's computers have gone down for the count, you realize you are immune. Your work, creativity, solitaire will not be interrupted by the virus.

Don't laugh when your friends take their computers in to be fixed or swept, simply lend a sympathetic ear and continue your game of Mine Sweeper.
