Title: Dr. Seuss visits Benicia
The Clocktower was filled to the brim with Cat in the Hats, Things (1 and 2), and other favorite Seuss characters, as the 19th annual Benicia Trivia Bee was held to support the Library's Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language Program, under the direction of Lynne Price. The format of the Trivia Bee is simple. Gene Gantt, who has been the Emcee for a number of years, asks the members of volunteer Teams, trivia questions, that have been created by the Trivia Bee Committee and kept hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar left on the porch of Funk & Wagnell for secrecy! There are 3 members of each team that pays $250 to participate in the proceedings for the coveted Trivia Bee Trophy. Those funds, along with money from a silent auction, live auction, and raffle tickets add up to help pay for the highly regarded Adult Literacy and ESL program here in Benicia. The evening begins with an excellent dinner prepared by First Street Cafe -- No! Dinner was not green eggs and ham. The Teen volunteers were very helpful as were the Event sponsors, Colorzone, Rrags, and Starbucks. Many Library and City employees donated time and energy to help out as well. Rose Russell, who sits on the Friends of the Library organization, selected the best costumes for awards. This event has become a Benicia Tradition that is attended by perhaps 300 Benicians and friends who enjoy a great time of fun, food, frivolity, and trivia. See you there next year!
